Summer is certainly heating up and that means there are plenty of trips to the beach and the pool in your future. Every season, I am reminded how lucky I am to be living in California – where the sunshine and the beaches seem endless. One way to spice up your summer wardrobe is by investing in updated swimwear. In a previous post, I shared all the latest and greatest bathing suit trends that are spicing up the season. Now, I want to address something that often gets overlooked – the coverup! This piece is just as important as the latter as it allows you to form a complete look that can be worn to any sort of summer celebration. I, myself, have been on the hunt for additional swim coverups to add to my arsenal because I have a lot more outdoor activities planned over the next few months! If you are in the same boat, you will definitely want to tune into the most have cover ups of the season. All the details are below!
Must Have Cover Ups to Level Up Your Swimwear
Crochet
The crochet trend is just one of those styles that keeps growing like rapid fire. It really fits into the aesthetic of summer and is a fun way to coverup your favorite bikinis and one-pieces. I love the more natural aesthetic the crochet fabrication provides and it happens to look really good in a variety of silhouettes. I noticed that these trendy cover ups tend to come in a variety of rainbow color ways so I recommend styling with a solid printed bathing suit underneath.
Sarong Skirts
I feel like the sarong skirt never really goes out of style. It is simplistic, effective and always manages to look more sophisticated as far as cover ups go. A mini sarong skirt has so much versatility! You can obviously tie it around your waist but the length allows it to double up as a headscarf. Or wrap it around your bust for a makeshift crop top. The longer sarong skirt counterparts provide the same effect.
Button Ups
One trend (that you may or may not already own) are button ups. In fact, this is one of my favorite summertime tricks to employ because I know I have a handful of shirts I can repurpose as cover ups. These act as amazing options when looking for a more minimal, relaxed aesthetic. As with any button up shirt, you can totally style this in a variety of ways. Stick to oversized fits when you want to pop them over your swimwear as an easy, breezy dress. Or you can choose to can tuck it into a pair of denim cut offs or a pair of boxer shorts. Of course, the best part about utilizing button ups as cover ups is that you can play around with different color ways and patterns. Personally, I am a sucker for a classic white or a navy ticking stripe for a nautical vibe!
Pop Prints
If you are looking to spice up your poolside look then you may want to consider shopping some pop prints to utilize as cover ups. I absolutely love some of the more vibrant patterns I have been seeing out in stores. From the Y2K inspired checker print to more seasonal florals and palm leaves, I think they all make for a more interesting look. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone either. Summer fashion is all about letting loose and this might be the perfect opportunity to try something new! Ready to take the plunge? I linked my current favorite pop print pieces that can double up as a cover up or as part of your everyday wardrobe (win-win).
Easy Dresses
My last suggestion for chic cover ups are easy-going dresses! Obviously, you can stretch your creativity because honestly, any dress can be effectively used as a cover up. Going this route allows you to maximize your purchase so you can wear these pieces with or without your swimwear in tow. My recommendation is to stick with comfortable, lightweight fabrications that you can easily pull on or off. For instance, ribbed knits, cotton, linen, or mesh are all great options that can be worn from the hotel to the pool to dinner. I shared some of my personal favorite summertime dresses below!
