There is nothing quite like a succinct, yet impactful wardrobe. Personally, I know that clothing can accumulate in your wardrobe in a blink of an eye if you are one to play into current trends and looks. Granted, I am one of the latter but I always ensure my clothing collection is somewhat condensed for the start of every new season. From there, I have a little more wiggle room to add a few trend savvy pieces to the mix but I try my best not to go overboard. For those who are looking to Marie Kondo their clothing and only keep things that spark joy, this is a great place to start. I put together a checklist of the minimal, timeless pieces you can continually mix-and-match for the the next few months. After all, a more organized closet means a more organized life! Ahead, you will find my picks for a fall capsule wardrobe (2022 version).
Minimal Fall Capsule Wardrobe Must-Haves
Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Outerwear
The change of seasons means that the chill in the air slowly starts to creep its way back in – especially during the early morning and late evenings, so to is important to dress in layers.
A timeless classic, the trench coat will always elevate your fall looks. Typically, you will find this style in either a camel brown, black or navy – all neutrals that can pair well with almost anything else within your collection. This style of coat is perfect for combating rainy fall days and can be molded to suit both casual and more formal occasions.
This year, it has been all about leather. The Moto jacket always makes a return during autumn but is further amplified thanks to the growing interest in the bikercore trend. Additionally, another leather style that has been blowing up is the bomber jacket. Stick to oversized cuts for easy of layering and a more casual vibe.
I said it before and I will say it again. A blazer is a year-round must-have item. Capsule wardrobe or not, there will always be a need for this polished outerwear piece. That being said, you might already own one or two. However, maybe it is high time you treat yourself to an upgrade. This is certainly an item that I recommend you invest in something of quality because you can wear it until the end of time.
Let’s talk tops. I usually take time to mention the need for a button up top but I think this is a well-known fact that it is another wardrobe staple. However, here are three other stylish tops that you might have forgot to add to your fall capsule wardrobe.
A slim turtleneck is perfect for when you want to layer but want to avoid looking too top-heavy. This top can easily mold to a variety of bottoms, especially if you have one or two in easy to work with colors such as black and white.
Of course, I would be remiss not to mention the need for some chunky sweaters at this time of the year. I think we can all admit that this is one of the best reasons of any autumnal collection so they are obviously a must for a fall capsule wardrobe. This is where you can have a little leeway too. Feel free to inject some color into the mix via a fun knit top.
Long Sleeve Bodysuit
Long sleeve bodysuits will come in handy on any given day of the week! They are sleek, versatile and effortless. You can wear them with jeans on the weekend or style them for the busy workweek.
Pants and Bottoms
Bottoms up! What is a fall capsule wardrobe without some pants to mix-and-match. I narrowed my selection down to three choices that all have a lot of styling power.
First tings first, we need some jeans in our fall capsule wardrobe. Obviously we know that skinny jeans are out of the picture these days. I wanted to highlight my personal favorite silhouette – the relaxed jean. Many of these give a gentle nod to 90s fashion but I am a fan because they are flattering and comfortable.
If we learned anything this year in fashion it is the fact that trousers are no longer just for the office. They have merits both styled casually and more dressed up, making them a versatile bottom to include in your wardrobe.
As a “wild” card, I wanted to throw in leather pants. Despite popular belief, they are not as outlandish of an item as one might traditionally think! They can actually be toned down quite a lot for more casual outfit fiends.
Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Dresses
Keeping it relatively simple with these fall wardrobe dress basics. But don’t worry – with the right styling, they are far from basic. Trust me.
Much like a chunky sweater is a hit piece for the fall capsule wardrobe so is its’ sweater dress counterpart. In this apartment, I really like to stick to basics and a slim, fitted sweater dress is something that you will never get tired of.
Similarly, a classic wrap dress is always an added bonus. If you are minimal at heart, you can choose to stick to your more safe naturals in this area. If not, this is another great place to branch out of your comfort zone and opt for something with a bolder color or a statement print.
Accessories and More
Finishing it off with everyone’s favorites – accessories! I wanted to specifically highlight one handbag and two pairs of shoes that I believe can have a lot of legs within your fall capsule wardrobe.
Academia obsessed or not, there is no denying how these smart shoes can elevate a look. If you want a more trendy take on this age old shoe, opt for a pair of loafers with chunkier soles for added height.
It is hard to choose between booties and tall boots but if I was forced to pick one, I would opt for the latter. There is just something about a pair of tall boots that just unlocks happiness within me. Plus, they are perfect for transitioning into autumn.
Last but not least, it is time to choose the handbag! This is a crucial step to the fall capsule wardrobe because this accessory is more than likely something you will likely with any of the above pieces. If it were up to me, I say you cannot go wrong with black. But feel free to sub with a cognac color too.
Let me know if there is anything else that you would absolutely need in your fall capsule wardrobe!
